What is all of this for?

Hi,

Last week I left a question on the table. What is all of this for?

For a long time I had the fitness answer. A better body. A better number on the bar, a better number on the scale. That answer works for years, and then one morning it does not, and you are standing there with a better body and the same question.

Here is where I landed. The body is not the point. The body carries the point around. You train it, feed it, and let it sleep so it can carry everything else: the clear head, the patience, the person you are at the table with the people you love. The walk goes beyond you by going within. That is the whole idea, and it is in the name.

There is a line I grew up with. An Ottoman poet, more than four hundred years ago, wrote that what remains under this dome is a pleasant sound. His pen name was Baki, which means the one who remains. He put his own name in the line and let everything else go.

That is my answer. All of this is for the sound you leave. By sound I do not mean what you did. I mean what you were. When the body, the mind and the third one are one thing, that one thing has a sound. It goes into everything you touch, and it does not stop when you do.

And I do not think the end is an end. The body goes. The sound stays, and it does not hang in the air on its own. It goes back into the whole it came from. Last week I wrote that we are part of something much bigger than us. I do not think that part ends when the body does. Call it whatever you call it. I am not here to name it for you.

So, BeyondYou is not a program you finish. There is no day when the purpose runs out. You keep walking because the sound is still being made, every ordinary morning, whether anyone is listening or not.

Same time next Friday.
