I have not trained in over a week

Hi,

My family is here from Istanbul, Türkiye. Most of them had never seen where Rachel and I actually live. So that is the whole plan right now. Show them the city. Sit at the table. Nothing else.

Which means the usual plan is gone. Dinner is late every night. Bread at every meal, because it is a Turkish table. Sleep is short and starts late. I have not trained since the day they landed and I am not tracking anything.

And I am not worried. Here is why.

There is a model I learned in CrossFit years ago, and it stuck with me enough to become number thirteen on the list of things BeyondYou is built on. Picture a line with three points. Sickness on one end. Fitness on the other. Wellness in the middle, which is where most people live, where the numbers are fine and nothing is wrong yet. The point of the model is not that fitness looks better. The point is distance. Every step toward fitness is a step away from sickness, and that distance is margin. It is what you get to spend when life shows up and the plan goes out the window.

I did not build that margin for a race or a number. I built it for weeks like this one. A stretch of late dinners, short sleep and no training costs me almost nothing, because there is a lot of room between where I stand and where trouble starts. I will be back to my own rhythm the day after they fly home, and my body will not hold any of it against me.

That is what the walk is for. Not so you can say no to the bread. So you can say yes to it late at night with your family across the table and pay nothing for it the next day.

Build the margin. Then spend it on the people who matter.

Same time next Friday.
